Reise

Tag 407

Day 407

The memories of the day of the start one year ago are still very alive; it was a moving day. In a few hours it’s time: back to the starting point. For days, my sleep has been fitful and the prickling and tingling increases with each kilometer moving closer. The excitement is the same like last time on my way to the Viktualienmarkt. The adrenaline even shoots up to the tips of my hair!
Man, how quickly time went by!

See you in a bit!

Da Wahnsinn, da Ati is da!

Wie geil ist das denn!!

Teures Pflaster

What an expensive place

The youth hostel has no longer existed for nine years. New family homes have taken its place. This meant going to the tourist information and searching for an inexpensive guesthouse. Well, the cheap ones were booked up; thus I had to bite the bullet and spend the extra bucks… However, I’m happy about the room. My stuff is soaking wet and now it can dry!

My oh my…

Weine nicht, wenn der Regen fällt. Dam dam, dam dam!

Guten Morgen Bayern!!!
Wer hat da nicht aufgegessen?
Wo is der boarische Himmi?!

Heut geht’s nach Kempten!

English:

Don’t cry when the rain is falling. Dam dam, dam dam!

Good morning Bavaria!!!

Who didn’t eat up?
Where is the Bavarian sky?!

Today I’m heading to Kempten!

Heimatluft

20110608-134154.jpg

English:

It smells like home

So, there are no more countries left. No more foreign languages and cultures. I feel that the journey is coming to an end. It is incredible how fast time has gone by. I arrived in Bavaria, an odd feeling…
The weather is just like as it was one year ago; all the same. For the remaining 200 km I got a few days. I need the time to finish the trip mentally… What a time it has been…!

Munich, I’m coming!

Switzerland!

With the flu it was a real pain to get to Berne. Additionally, the weather changed during the way. 120 km after Berne it was just raining… My companion Petrus seemed to like France better… Soaked with rain and sweat I arrived at Berne where it was 12 degrees and I simply longed for a hot shower. It was so good that I didn’t want to come out of it after half an hour! I had a little communication problem with Pierre. He lives outside the city in the mountains. Therefore, I stayed at a youth hostel, € 35, welcome to Switzerland…! This country definitely is the most expensive on my journey!
The next day, Pierre visited me with his bike and also stayed at the same youth hostel. It was great to see him again! The evening became early morning; I haven’t laughed like that since our last time! The next morning, after approximately 4 hours of sleep, we were woken up unpleasantly. Check out at 10, a lady shouted who just came in. A little dizzy and with minor disturbances in balance, we went to Interlaken. The first bike day together since Tibet! The weather was on our side and after the first kilometers, we got back to our biking routine. Beautiful scenery, nice weather and good spirits made this day one of the best since I’ve been back to Europe! Thank you, Pierre! Unfortunately, he had to go back in the evening by train, work was calling.

The same evening, Bubu arrived with the last train. Only one month has passed since we saw each other. However, it was bit of a nail biter to wait for her at the train station… Like 15-year olds we cycled to the camping place: she sat on the handlebar and I was pushing the pedals! That was premiere for Terra but it wasn’t mulish at all :-)
The next evening, another visit! Nicki and Steffi also came over for the weekend! What shall I say; I’m a little speechless… Beyond the “Röstigraben”, German is spoken, my girlfriend takes the train instead of the plane. Friends go on a car trip of only a few hours and increase my anticipation towards home by dimensions! Thanks for the visit, thanks for the time and special thanks to Nicki: THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT BEER!!!!!!!

Now I’ve just passed Luzern and will spend the last in Switzerland tomorrow! My flu has become considerably better after the weekend! Only the weather… Now I will trail off without hurry. The last week of an incredible journey has begun! I still haven’t recognized it but it is beginning… I intend to arrive at the Viktualienmarkt on Saturday at 6 pm. But there are many beer gardens along the Isar River and some friends want to meet me on my way. Balance on the bike might become a challenge :-)

See you soon!

English:

I’m running out of steam…

The mistral finished me off. I started in Montpellier and recapitulated after 25 km of head wind. It didn’t make much sense to me to burn myself out before Switzerland. Therefore, I took the train to Voiron and hope that my reserves will last until I arrive at Pierre’s in Bern.
I’m not having a good run at all. I feel that my bronchi and sinuses are clogged. When breathing, my lungs wheeze. My strategy now is to drastically reduce the daily performance, that’s also why I took the train. I really can’t reach my target of 100 km and more any longer…
Why the rush and no break for regeneration? First, every day costs extra money, and second, my day of arrival in Munich is already fixed. In the evening of 11 June I’ll have a Maß of beer at the Viktualienmarkt!
Until then the motto is to grit my teeth.

Vielen Dank! Komme wieder! :-)

Dennoch.  Berge? Auf sie mit Gebrüll!!! Noch etwa 1.100 km!

À bientôt!

The last day at the sea

The flu still unnerves me and doesn’t make it easy. The few little mountains along the coast to France were close to the edge with such a handicap… I was pumping air like crazy, always almost hyperventilating. This resulted in cramping, hardening and souring of the muscles…

Nevertheless, everyday has its nice sides, phenomenal scenery and new encounters. Frederico from Columbia for example. On his racing bike, he cycles at the coast to Italy for two weeks! Amazing, a Columbian on a bike through Europe…? A super nice guy with whom I cycled for the rest of the day. In addition, he invited me for dinner! Come to Munich, be my guest, you will like it!

The following day around noon I was shortly checking the map to see if I’m still on the right route. Then a car stopped and Albin from Switzerland invited me for eating. At this point I didn’t even know his name and he didn’t know mine. A man who doesn’t hesitate! While I didn’t know what was happening, he was taking his car apart to make space for Terra and was trying to reach his wife. Well, France + food = jackpot! And so it was. His wife, Helene, whipped up delicious food while we were sipping delicious nutmeg wine. Yummy…! It was like Christmas! The retired couple lives at the sea and they like to travel in their camping car, as they call a motorhome here. Albin stopped me because, as he said, my bike and I looked like a long journey. Well… Do we, Terra and I, already look like it…? In the afternoon they drove me to Montpellier, the destination of the day, which I had set. What shall I say, sometimes there are encounters that let you forget all the exertions. Thank you very much! I’ll be back! :-)

Now I’m off towards north; it becomes increasingly mountainous and it looks like Petrus wants to stay here… As long as the sh… flu is still bothering me, there won’t be any strong days. My performance dropped by a perceived 30%… Despite. Mountains? Let’s go get them, hear me roar!!! I’ve got approx. 1,100 km left!

English:

Sick in the tent

I just wanted to have a swimming day, now I’m lying sick in the tent… I have no idea how you can get the flu when it’s 32 degrees…? I surely will not cure it out completely because I lack the patience for it… Furthermore, it is pretty unsuitable now because it will surely be wearisome over the mountains… Well, I still have a few days before continuing towards Switzerland!

This May is not my month… Anyways! It’s still nice!

The more I go towards north, the more Dutch, English and German people I see. In the supermarkets, German is spoken and I’ve already seen the first “Bild” newspaper… Recently, I also watched the final match of the German Football Confederation Cup with fans of the Schalke club at the camping place; that was something! Yes, home isn’t far away…

First, I’ll cycle along the coast to Montpellier and from there on towards north. Closely passing Lyon to Geneva from where I’ll contact Pierre at the latest.

The coast from Valencia to Barcelona was often a feast. Humongous cliffs rise steeply out of the water up to 50 meters, like for example in the Parc del Garraf, of which I unfortunately don’t have pictures anymore… The loss of the camera simply makes me scream…! Ah well, I bought the same camera for a fourth of the original price in Barcelona. From the power plug I figured out that it is a US import. The strange thing about it is that it has the choice of 10 languages like the old one, but not German…

Catalonia, a very special part of Spain, shares more parallels with Bavaria than one might think. Only the difference to the rest of the country is greater than in ours. You only have to imagine that the public life in Bavaria is laid out in Bavarian only. Newspapers, TV, even the road signs and the public transportation; everything in Bavarian. I also find it funny that Spanish TV broadcasts are translated into Catalonian! Well, in this view, opinions differ and tensions arise if one thinks of the desired independence… I was told that the Catalonians didn’t really celebrate that Spain won the soccer World Cup… Further, half of the team was from Barca… However, having rough edges is representative and I like that! Barcelona is a livable and lively city that attracts me. This is a rare feeling I have towards a city.

Here I stay at an old friend’s from India. She is Catalonian with Ecuadorian blood. I got to know her and her friend in Varanasi where we had a great time with many other people from all over the world. This was 6 months ago…Thanks to Clara, her friends and other people living in the shared apartment I had a great view of the city and got to know many interesting people. Having said this, thank you and I hope to welcome you to Munich one day!

Next stop: Somewhere in Switzerland at Pierre’s!
