Opas Geburtsst\u00e4dte Nanticoke ist ein kleiner verschlafener Ort. Dennoch, beim ersten Schild, auf dem Nanticoke erschien, kribbelte es m\u00e4chtig! Wie es zu erwarten war, fand ich nach etwa 90 Jahren seiner Abreise nichts…
\nMeine Suche begann ich bei der Polizei, in deren Computer war nichts zu finden. Die Datenbank reicht nur bis in die 70er. Fragte nach dem B\u00fcrgermeister, der ist neu und wohl viel zu jung… Da es in dem Ort auch kein Motel gibt, fragte ich die Polizei, aber auch die Feuerwehr durch die Blume, ob ich denn auf der Wache bleiben kann. Leider auch ohne Erfolg. Ziemlich ern\u00fcchternd und a weng traurig stieg ich auf’s Rad’l. Da hat der Polizist mir noch einen Tipp gegeben. Eine Adresse von der Nanticoke Historical Society. Das sind einige B\u00fcrger, die\u00a0die Geschichte des Ortes aufarbeiten und mir hoffentlich mehr helfen k\u00f6nnen. Gesagt, getan!
\nAn dem Tag war es aber schon zu sp\u00e4t, also kam ich am n\u00e4chsten Morgen wieder. Machte alle Angaben, die mir bekannt sind und die Suche ging sofort in der eigenen Datenbank los. Leider auch ohne Erfolg… Der nette Herr sagte mir, dass manche Jahre lang suchen, es sei damals eine wilde Zeit gewesen. Nun, wir tauschten E-Mail-Adressen und sind gespannt, ob und was man in Erfahrung bringen kann.
\nGuter Dinge und mit einigen Eindr\u00fccken machte ich mich auf die letzten Kilometer in Amerika nach New York City. Am Fluss entlang, \u00fcber H\u00fcgel und durch W\u00e4lder kam ich schlie\u00dflich ins Ballungsgebiet. Wie jede gro\u00dfe Stadt war es laut und hektisch. Dabei sah ich wieder eine Menge Daumen aus den Autos aufkommen und mit manchem Biker ergab sich ein Gespr\u00e4ch. Das einzig Gef\u00e4hrliche waren nur die Br\u00fccken, das empfehl ich wirklich niemanden… Schlie\u00dflich nahm ich ein Boot von Jersey nach Manhattan, da es neben der U-Bahn der einzige Weg \u00fcber den Hudson River ist.
\n\u00dcber New York\u00a0zu schreiben ist noch zu fr\u00fch,\u00a0dazu sp\u00e4ter. Aber eins vorweg. Die Stadt schl\u00e4gt ein wie a Watsch’n!<\/p>\n

Nanticoke, my granddad\u2019s place of birth, is a small calm town. However, the first sign saying Nanticoke gave me a tingling sensation. As I expected, approximately 90 years after his departure I couldn\u2019t find anything…
\n<\/span>My search started at the police but nothing could be found on their computers. <\/span>T<\/span>heir database only goes back to the 1970s. I asked for the mayor, but he is obviously new and too young\u2026 As this place doesn\u2019t have a motel, I asked the police and also the fire fighters in a roundabout way if I might stay at their station. Unfortunately I didn\u2019t succeed. Quite disillusioned and a little sad I got on my bike. Then the police officer gave me a tip: the address of the Nanticoke Historical Society. It comprises a group of citizens who review the local history and who could hopefully help me. Said and done!
\nHowever, it was already too late that day, so I came back the next morning. I gave all the information I have and they immediately started the search in their own database. Unfortunately without success again\u2026 The nice gentleman told me that the search takes some time for certain years as it was a wild time back then. Well, we exchanged e-mail addresses and are excited if there\u2019s something to be found out and what.
\nWith good spirits and several impressions I continued my way on the last American kilometers to New York City. Along the river, over hills and through forests I finally reached the concentrated urban area. Like every big city, it\u2019s loud and hectic. Again, I noted many thumbs-ups out of the cars and I talked to some bikers. Dangerous were only the bridges, I really don\u2019t recommend them to anyone\u2026 Finally, I took a boat from Jersey to Manhattan, which is the only way over the Hudson River besides the subway.
\nIt\u2019s still too early to write about New York, later more. But one thing ahead: The city hits you like a slap in the face!<\/span><\/p>\n
