Nach einem 30-st\u00fcndigen Trip begr\u00fc\u00dfte mich Kalifornien mit Regen und Temperaturen um die 15 Grad. Nicht dass ich klagen m\u00f6chte, aber nach Malaysia mit beinah 40 Grad und hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit ist das schon recht zapfig. Zudem soll es auch noch so regnerisch bleiben…<\/p>\n

Seit nun einer Woche sitz ich hier schon rum und warte auf das Winterequipment aus der Heimat. Langsam wird’s langweilig… USA ist ein weiterer Kulturschock. Es scheint wie im Film zu sein. Das Stra\u00dfennetz ist in Karo-Rastern angelegt, die Navigation somit kinderleicht. An gr\u00f6\u00dferen Kreuzungen Fast-Food-Restaurants, Superm\u00e4rkte, Waschsalons und vieles mehr. Seit langer Zeit ist jetzt Rechtsverkehr angesagt, die ersten Meter waren bisschen gew\u00f6hnungsbed\u00fcrftig.<\/p>\n

LA, eine Stadt mit Kontrasten wie alle anderen bisher, aber nur selten so multikulturell wie hier. Mexikaner, Afroamerikaner, Asiaten und andere bilden das Stadtbild, das auch in der Mode Unterschiede aufweist. Es gibt hier Viertel, da wird’s einem am Tag schon mulmig. Das ist meist aber nur der Gangsterstyle oder gesellschaftliches Gef\u00fcge. Nachts ist das schon anders, man sollte nicht unbedingt raus, laut dem Personal vom Hostel…. (Vielleicht liegt es nur an dem Viertel in dem ich bin…?) In Hollywood als Kontrast sieht man haupts\u00e4chlich Touris. Klar, der Magnetpunkt der Stadt. Dahinter Beverly Hills und Bel Air mit Wahnsinns-Villen der Reichen, die sich von der K\u00fcste \u00fcber die kleinen Berge erstrecken. Mir pers\u00f6nlich haben hier die Str\u00e4nde am Meisten gefallen. Zwar zu zapfig, um zu baden, aber sehr besonders mit den kleinen Vierteln an den Str\u00e4nden. Surfer toben in den Wellen, Jogger laufen am Strand, \u00e4ltere Leute genie\u00dfen den Sonnenuntergang und am Rand gibt es eine Fahrradstra\u00dfe, wo man die komplette K\u00fcste abfahren kann! Radsport wird hier gro\u00df geschrieben, sei es Rennrad oder Mountainbike. Schade nur, dass es kaum vern\u00fcnftiges Kartenmaterial f\u00fcr Biker gibt… Hab drei Tage lang L\u00e4den abgeklappert und \u00fcberall nachgefragt, Stra\u00dfenkarten werden schon reichen, wie bisher auch.<\/p>\n

Nun hab ich einen gro\u00dfen Hunger nach der gro\u00dfen Weite und der Natur des Landes! Zun\u00e4chst geht’s ab zum Grand Canyon! St\u00e4dte werde ich meiden, sie sollen alle ziemlich gleich aussehen…<\/p>\n

After a 30-hour trip, California welcomed me with rain and temperatures around 15 degrees. Not that I want to complain \u2013 but compared to Malaysia with almost 40 degrees and high air humidity, it\u2019s quite chilly here. Further, the weather is said to remain rainy like this\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

For a week now I\u2019ve been sitting here waiting for my winter equipment sent from home. Gradually it\u2019s getting boring\u2026 The US is another culture shock. It seems like being in a movie. The road network is arranged in square grids, thus making navigation foolproof. You find fast-food restaurants, supermarkets, launderettes and much more at larger intersections. After a long time, I have to cycle on the right side; I had to get used to it again during the first few meters.<\/span><\/p>\n

LA is a city with many contrasts just like all other cities before, but only few of them were as multicultural as this one. Mexicans, Afro-Americans, Asians and others form the street picture that also shows differences in fashion. There are hoods that make you feel uncomfortable even during day time. Mostly, it\u2019s the gangster style or the social structure. However, at night it\u2019s pretty different; according to the hostel staff you shouldn\u2019t go outside if you don\u2019t have to\u2026 (Maybe that\u2019s just the area in which I stay\u2026?) By contrast, in Hollywood you mainly see tourists. Sure, it\u2019s the city\u2019s center of attraction. Behind it there is Beverly Hills and Bel Air with the incredible mansions of the rich, which extend from the coast to the small mountains. Personally, I like the beaches best here. Though it\u2019s too chilly to swim, it\u2019s very special with the little quarters at the beaches. Surfers enjoy the waves, runners run at the beach, elder people take delight in the sunset and at the side there is a bike street on which you can cycle along the entire coast! Biking is big here, may it be bike racing or mountain biking. But it\u2019s a pity that there are hardly any useful maps for bikers\u2026 For three days, I went from shop to shop and asked everywhere, but the street maps have to be sufficient, as they have before.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m longing for the great wideness and nature of the country! First, I set off to the Grand Canyon. I\u2019ll avoid cities as much as I can; they seem to be looking all the same\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n
