Die Stadt ist ein reiner \u00d6l- und Gasbunker. Nur diese Industrie bestimmt hier das Geschehen. Ich freute mich auf dem Weg hierher seit Tagen auf eine Dusche. Nun sind hier alle Zimmer ausgebucht, Arbeiter aus diesen Industrien wohnen da. Bezahlt werden die Zimmer von den Unternehmen, wie ich sp\u00e4ter erfahren habe. Das erkl\u00e4rt auch die Preise. Nach zig Stunden stand ich mal wieder an einer Rezeption des f\u00fcnften Hotels und es war nat\u00fcrlich voll. Da sprach mich Marty aus Irland an – er ist wie alle anderen beruflich hier. Jedenfalls kamen wir ins Gespr\u00e4ch und er lud mich auf einen Drink in der Poolbar auf dem Dach ein. Im selben Moment sagte die Dame von der Rezeption, dass ein Zimmer frei geworden ist. Ein scheinbares Gl\u00fcck, denn sie warf noch den Preis hinterher, 66.000 Tenge. Das hab ich erst oben an der Bar \u00fcberrissen, dass es \u00fcber 350 \u20ac pro Nacht sind… Da war klar, ich muss wohl aus der Stadt raus und zelten, keine Dusche… Marty, ein sau cooler Typ, der schon den Gobi-Marathon lief (Wahnsinn!), quatschte kurz mit seinem Freund Richard. Danach t\u00e4tigten sie ein paar Anrufe und mussten in die Arbeit, versicherten mir aber, dass sie mich anrufen werden.<\/p>\n

W\u00e4hrenddessen besch\u00e4ftigte ich mich mit einem anderen Problem. Mein Visum l\u00e4uft am 28. August ab… Unm\u00f6glich bis dahin an die Grenze zu kommen. Der Weg, den ich mir ausgesucht habe, ist wohl eine reine Sandpiste und unpassierbar – laut allen, die wissen wollten, wie ich hier lang fahren will. Das hei\u00dft ich m\u00fcsste Richtung Norden nach Ural und von dort S\u00fcdost, das w\u00e4ren dann 4.800 km bis zur Grenze. Des Weiteren muss ich in Almaty ein Visum f\u00fcr China holen. Keine Ahnung, wie lang das dauert… Mein Plan ist jetzt, auch wenn es mir nicht schmeckt und ich nach der Tour nicht mehr sagen kann, dass ich mit dem Rad um die Welt gefahren bin, einen Zug zu nehmen… So wie es aussieht, kommt der n\u00e4chste am 20ten… Im Moment wei\u00df ich noch nicht genau, wie es weiter geht. Will unbedingt zum Aralsee! Wann und wie, das wird sich noch ergeben. Eins steht aber fest. Meine Deadline f\u00fcr Almaty ist der 10. August. Eine Woche f\u00fcr Visum und eine Woche, um an die Grenze zu kommen. Mein Zuckerl, dass mich grad erheitert, ist, dass Bubu am 11ten f\u00fcr eine Woche kommt!! Juhe!!<\/p>\n

Noch am Bahnhof bekam ich einen Anruf von Marty. Er arrangierte ein Treffen mit Einheimischen f\u00fcr mich. Keine Stunde sp\u00e4ter stand ich in einer Zweizimmerwohnung mit K\u00fcche und Bad f\u00fcr mich allein! 50 Dollar, nicht grad g\u00fcnstig, aber die Vorstellung vom billigen Osten hab ich schon lang abgelegt. Das Preisniveau ist hier meist westlich und es gibt kaum Alternativen… Jedenfalls war ich super happy, duschen zu k\u00f6nnen und meine Klamotten wieder zu waschen! Am Abend war ich noch mit Richard, Marty und deren Freund Ludo aus Holland essen, wir verbrachten einen sehr netten Abend! An der Stelle m\u00f6chte ich mich f\u00fcr den Einsatz bedanken. Auch bei den zwei Jungs, die mich zu der Wohnung gebracht haben: Yirlan und Yerbol! Fettes merci!<\/p>\n

Zu der Stadt gibt es nur noch eins zu sagen: Auf Wiedersehen Europa!!! Ich bin in Asien!!! Wahnsinn!!!<\/p>\n

Atyrau and the next problems!<\/span><\/p>\n

The city is a mere bunker full of oil and gas. Only this industry dictates life here. I\u2019ve been waiting to take a shower for days as I was on my way to this place. Now all rooms are booked up, the workers of these industries live there. The rooms are paid by the companies as I learned later. This also explains the prices. After umpteen hours, I found myself standing at the reception of the fifth hotel which of course was fully booked. This was when Marty from Ireland spoke to me \u2013 he\u2019s here for business like everyone else. Anyway, we started talking and he invited me for a drink at the pool bar on top of the roof. At the same moment the reception lady told me that a room had just become vacant. Apparent luck \u2013 then she told me the price: 66,000 tenge. Then, upstairs at the bar, I realized that this is more than 350 \u20ac per night\u2026 Then it was clear that I needed to go out of the city and pitch my tent, no shower\u2026 Marty, a really cool guy who already took part in the Gobi March (madness!) just quickly talked to his friend Richard. Then they made a few calls and needed to go to work but assured me that they would give me a call.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the meantime I dealt with another problem. My visa expires on 28 August\u2026 Impossible to reach the border until then. Obviously, the track I chose leads through sand only and is impassible according to everyone who wanted to know my route here. This means I would have to cycle northwards to the Ural Mountains and from there southeastwards; this would be 4,800 km to the border. Moreover, I need to apply for a visa for China in Almaty. I have no idea how long that takes\u2026 My plan now is to take a train, although I don\u2019t like the idea and, after the tour, I can\u2019t say anymore that I cycled around the world\u2026 It looks like the next train departs on the 20th<\/sup>. At the moment I don\u2019t how it will continue. I absolutely do want to go to the Aral Sea! We\u2019ll see how and when. But one thing is for sure. My deadline for Almaty is 10 August. One week for the visa and one week to reach the border. The icing on the cake lighting up my day is that Bubu comes for a 1-week visit on the 11th<\/sup>!! Yippee!<\/span><\/p>\n

Already at the station I got a call from Marty. He arranged a meeting with locals for me. Hardly an hour later I found myself standing in a 2-room apartment with a kitchen and a bathroom only for me! 50 dollars, not quite cheap, but I gave up on the thought of the cheap east long ago. The price level here is mostly like in the west and there are hardly any alternatives\u2026 Anyway, I was super happy to take a shower and to wash my clothes again! In the evening, Richard, Marty, their friend Ludo from the Netherlands and I had dinner together and had a very good time! At this point I\u2019d like to thank them for their support. And I also thank the two guys who brought me to the apartment: Yirlan and Yerbol, thank you very much!<\/span><\/p>\n

There is only one thing I\u2019d like to say about the city: Good-bye Europe!!! I\u2019m in Asia!!! Amazing!!!<\/span><\/p>\n
